What’s on the G1 Test?

In This Article

The G1 test covers traffic signs and road rules in Ontario. Once you pass this test, you’ll have completed the first stage in the graduated licensing system, with two road exams (Class G2 and Class G) with an examiner.

The Test Requirements

To secure your G1 licence, ensure that you:

  • Are at least 16 years old
  • Successfully complete an eye exam
  • Pass the written G1 knowledge test

Questions on the Test

The G1 exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to finish. It is divided into two sections:

  • 20 questions about rules of the road
  • 20 questions about road signs

To pass the written knowledge assessment, you must correctly answer at least 16 questions in each section, achieving a total score of at least 80%.

The Ontario Driver’s Handbook contains all the information you need, which you’ll explore in the upcoming chapters, lesson by lesson.

The Day of the Test

On the test day, remember to bring:

  • Payment for test fees (cash, debit, or credit card accepted)
  • Two forms of identification
  • Glasses or contact lenses (if required for driving)

Did You Know?

  • The test is untimed (no time limit), so you can work at your own pace.
  • You can choose from English, French, or 24 other languages for your test.
  • You’ll receive your test results immediately, so you’ll know right away whether you passed or not.
